Student Action for Refugees (STAR) is a national charity that works with over 12,000 students to welcome refugees to the UK. There are over 30 STAR groups led by students at universities throughout the UK and a national team which coordinates and supports the groups. The charity is governed by STAR’s Board of Trustees, elected annually by the students themselves at the national STAR conference and AGM.
Edinburgh STAR was set up by a group of students at The University of Edinburgh after the media coverage of the Syrian refugee crisis and the problems faced by refugees in the UK became particularly visible in summer 2015. No similar group existed at the university and the students wanted to connect individuals passionate about social justice to refugee volunteering opportunities in and around Edinburgh, in addition to campaigning and fundraising on campus to raise awareness of the problems faced by refugees in the UK.
